In the world on Import, the first and main issue importers have to deal with is VAT & Customs.
When importing goods from non-EU countries, or from an EU country in case of a hard Brexit, there are a few rules to follow that are simple in nature, but complex in practice.
In theory, any importer will have to find out the commodity code for each item to classify the goods for tax and regulations, and assuming they’re registered for EURO number, they have to declare their imports to customs, most businesses use a courier or freight forwarder to do this for them, transferring this task to the importing agent, after that, they will need to pay instantly for the VAT & duty, as HMRC does not offer payment terms, unless the importer had a deferment in place.
Since most businesses use a courier or freight forwarder to make customs declarations for them, due to the complexity of the process, it creates a huge volume for clearance and delivery agents to handle, individually identifying HS codes for each commodity, creating test entries and calculations to verify the right code, submitting an official declaration to HMRC, paying the VAT & Duties out of the deferment held with customs, transferring the goods from customs sheds to stop paying further storage fees into their own facilities, holding the business for a few more days while calling the consignees individually to pay the VAT & duties already paid in case the agent cleared, or not paid and racking up storage fees if they didn’t, until the funds are paid eventually by the final consignee, upon which the goods are released for delivery.
The values of this solution can be seen on day one, mainly by the reduction in labour cost and overtime hours spent on calculating, testing and calling, and the hugely added capacity to take on more business, improving the cash flow and providing the liquidity to businesses, especially the SMEs who find it hard with liquidity, automating the process will allow it to work 24/7 compared to the 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and on top of all of that, custom-made reports for reconciliation purposes and delivery planning, making “Duties etc” almost work for you as your imports department, with a fraction of the cost needed to cover the same work manually.
Our customers are enjoying a healthy and efficient process with their imports, encouraged to chase more business and more distribution opportunities, and running a light asset clearance department that relies on a sophisticated solution that runs through over 1 million lines of different commodities, 110+ countries, average of 6700 HS code per country, and returning results in milliseconds.
Do you have a big imports department? Do you run a business model that imports from outside the EU? Are you worried about trading with the EU post Brexit?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then we need to talk!
You do not need to be in the industry or an expert in customs to know that the abovementioned procedure is outdated, expensive, time wasting and discouraging for anyone in the import business, or for simply online shoppers who prefer to make purchases from outside the EU, or simply cannot find what they want in the EU.
Seeing how ecommerce volumes are dictating a change in the old procedure, many importers tried to come up with solutions, but never managed to cover the full process, and that’s where we at S9 Tech felt that we need to fill the gap, and make businesses focus on growing the volume instead of worrying about “growing volume”!
“Duties etc” is the most comprehensive duty calculator to date, with endless customization capabilities that allow importers- retailers or freight forwarders and integrators- to calculate the duties and VAT for any B2C import shipment on day zero of the shipment life, while it is still being handled by the forwarding agent at the origin country, then triggers a notification to the consignee in the form of an email and a SMS, containing a secure payment link that collects the said amount into the bank account of the importer, providing the cash flow prior to the clearance, and through integration with operating systems, control the hold and release updates for automated warehouses and big operations.
